As the sun rises over the rolling hills of Southern Arizona, casting a golden hue across the desert landscape, the anticipation in the air is palpable. For upland bird hunters, the region offers an unparalleled experience—one that has captured the hearts of many and continues to beckon enthusiasts from across the country. Living in Elgin, Arizona, and as proud owners of the Bar King Dog Horse Ranch, we can personally attest to the unique opportunities that await those who venture into the uplands for a day of quail hunting. Specifically, the chance to pursue Mearns quail, alongside the other two species—scaled quail and Gambel’s quail—makes for an exciting and rewarding hunt.

Mearns quail, also known as Montezuma quail, are a true gem of the Southern Arizona landscape. Unlike their more common cousins, Mearns quail are known for their distinctive and striking appearance. With their rich, chestnut-colored plumage and white facial markings, these birds are not only beautiful but also intriguing in their behavior. They thrive in the unique habitat of the region, often residing in the rugged canyons and foothills, making them a challenge to hunt.
Hunting Mearns quail is an experience that requires skill, patience, and respect for the environment. Their tendency to hold tight rather than fly adds an element of thrill to the pursuit. The landscape they inhabit, characterized by dense brush and rocky outcroppings, demands the use of finely-trained hunting dogs. As an active members of the North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association (NAVHDA), we can attest to the invaluable role that versatile hunting dogs play in successfully locating and retrieving these elusive.

One of the most compelling reasons to hunt in Southern Arizona is the opportunity to achieve what many hunters refer to as the “Arizona Trifecta” or “Arizona Slam.” In a single day, it is possible to hunt all three quail species: Mearns, Scaled, and Gambel’s quail. Each species presents its own unique challenges and rewards, making for a diverse and exhilarating hunting experience.
What makes Southern Arizona particularly special for quail hunting is not just the variety of species but the breathtaking landscapes that serve as the backdrop for your adventures. The region is characterized by its diverse topography, ranging from high deserts to lush canyons, offering a stunning array of natural beauty. The weather, too, is a significant factor—mild winters and stunning spring temperatures create perfect conditions for hunting, making it an ideal destination year-round.
Hunting in Southern Arizona also means being a part of the ongoing conservation efforts that are vital for maintaining healthy quail populations and their habitats. As hunters, we play a crucial role in wildlife management and habitat preservation. By participating in these activities, we help ensure that future generations will have the opportunity to experience the thrill of quail hunting in this remarkable region.

Organizations like the Southern Arizona chapter of Quail Forever are committed to promoting responsible hunting practices and educating hunters on the importance of conservation. By fostering a strong community of upland hunters, we can work together to protect the habitats that support Mearns, Scaled, and Gambel’s quail.
As you consider your next hunting destination, We encourage you to think of Southern Arizona and the unique opportunities it offers. The chance to hunt Mearns quail, while also pursuing the Arizona trifecta is an experience that every upland bird hunter should have on their bucket list.
